Assistance Flying Instructor

The Assistant Flying Instructor Rating (AFI) course is designed for trained pilots to become flying instructors. This course consists of all the necessary training to commercially teach and aid cadets in obtaining their flying licenses.

The Assistant Flight Instructor program is the opportunity to demonstrate outstanding performance and train future pilots to obtain their licenses. Professional pilots are required to learn for their entire aviation career.

Training Program Outline:

Ground School (125 Hours)

Theoretical Knowledge Training – Phase 1 (125 Hours)

  • Basic Aerodynamics
  • Navigation and Meteorology
  • Aviation Law Flight Rules and Procedures
  • Airframe and Engines and Instruments
  • Instructional Technique
  • Ground Subject Tests
  • Mass Briefs, Pre-flight & Post-flight briefings

Flying Training (40 Hours)

Single Engine Type Tech (10 Hours)

Flying Training (Single Engine) – Phase 1: AFI Level (40 Hours)

Course Requirements

  • Be at least 21 years of age

  • Hold at least a CPL issued under Regulation 59 of MCAR

  • Completed at least 200 hours of flight time on aeroplanes, of which 150 hours as PIC

  • Hold or have held an instrument rating (IR) of an aeroplane

  • Give proof of their competency by giving a test mass brief based on the material they have developed for the applicable subject

  • Demonstrate competency in airborne instructional techniques. Assessment to be done by Head of Training or Chief Flight Instructor or designated Flight Instructor

  • Letter of approval from the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia; this is secured by the applicant communicating their interest in the applicable course, their requisite medical certificate, and their existing and valid CPL/IR and qualification to CAAM.

  • An existing and valid Malaysian Commercial Pilot’s License (Aeroplane)

  • Pass medical examination Class I with a requisite certificate from a CAAM designated medical examiner and applicants are advised to check the CAAM website directly for an up-to-date list of such designated medical examiners.

  • English Language at minimum level 4 is acceptable, but higher competence is desired.
