Advanced Upset Prevention Recovery Training
Layang Layang Flying Academy’s Advanced UPRT course equips pilots and cadets with the essential knowledge and hands-on skills to recognise, prevent, and recover from in-flight upsets. Conducted under Civil Aviation Authority Malaysia’s approved syllabus using the GameBird GB-1 and Cessna 172, this program meets International Civil Aviation Organisation and airline entry standards through advanced airmanship and safety-focused flight handling.

Training Structure
Duration : 3 Days
Structure : 5 Hours Ground + 4 Hours Flight
Aircraft : Cessna 172 Skyhawk+ GameBird GB-1
Phase 1: Ground School (5 Hours)
Subjects Covered
1. ICAO UPRT Objectives
Overview of global UPRT standards and safety philosophy.

2. Human Factors & G-Awareness
Understanding physiological limits, spatial disorientation, and G-tolerance in upset scenarios.

3. Aerodynamics of Stalls & Spins
Study of angle of attack, lift behaviour, and recovery principles from critical flight conditions.

4. Aircraft Limitations
Identifying operational boundaries and structural considerations during recovery manoeuvres.

5. Threat & Error Management
Application of CRM and TEM in high-stress situations.

6. Recovery Strategies & Scenarios
Practical briefing on real-world upset cases, recovery decision-making, and energy management.
Phase 2: Flying Phase (4 Hours)
A dynamic, hands-on flying sequence designed to refine aircraft control, build instinctive recovery skills, and strengthen pilot confidence in all upset conditions.
This phase bridges theory with practice, allowing cadets to safely experience, recognise, and recover from a wide range of in-flight upsets under direct instructor supervision.
Training Exercises Include:
-
Stall prevention and recovery
-
Spin awareness and recovery
-
Nose-high and nose-low attitude recovery
-
Spiral dive recognition and recovery
-
Startle effect and situational management
-
Energy management and flight path control
-
Crew communication and decision-making under stress
1. (1.5 hrs) – Cessna 172 Skyhawk
The initial phase introduces stall prevention, basic unusual attitude recovery, and energy management in a stable training platform.
Pilots learn to apply smooth control inputs, maintain situational awareness, and manage angle of attack within safe operational limits.

2. (2.5 hrs) – GameBird GB-1
The advanced phase transitions into high-performance upset recovery using the aerobatic-capable GameBird GB-1 — the only aircraft of its kind in Southeast Asia.
This stage exposes cadets to full-envelope manoeuvres and higher G environments, improving spatial orientation and precision control under demanding conditions.
