Prospective cadets sometimes treat simulator hours as the less exciting part of a programme — time spent not flying. That gets it backwards. Simulator training is where the most difficult parts of instrument flying are actually learned, and where things can be practised that no responsible instructor would stage in an aircraft.
What Flight and Navigation Procedures Trainer (FNPT II) means
FNPT stands for Flight and Navigation Procedures Trainer. It is a ground-based training device that reproduces the cockpit environment, instrumentation and handling characteristics of a class of aircraft closely enough to be credited towards a licence or rating within the limits the authority allows.
Level II denotes a device capable of supporting instrument flying and navigation procedures training. LLFA’s FNPT II can be configured for single-engine and multi-engine operations, so students move between configurations without changing devices. See it in the fleet.
Why it is not a lesser version of flying
You can stop time
An instructor can freeze a scenario mid-approach, explain exactly what went wrong, reset to the same point, and run it again. In an aircraft that moment is gone — you fly the approach, you land, and you discuss it afterwards. The simulator turns a single learning opportunity into five.
You can fail things safely
Engine failures, instrument failures, electrical problems, degraded navigation aids: all can be introduced deliberately and repeatedly. This is the core of the case for simulation. A student who has handled a failure twenty times on the ground responds very differently the first time something goes wrong in the air.
Weather on demand
Instrument flying requires instrument conditions. Waiting for suitable weather is inefficient and unpredictable. In the device, conditions are set to whatever the lesson needs.
Procedures without the workload
Early instrument training carries a heavy cognitive load. Removing the demands of a real aircraft lets students concentrate on the procedure itself, then transfer it to the aircraft once it is secure.
Where it fits in the syllabus

The pattern is consistent: brief the procedure, rehearse it in the device until it is repeatable, then fly it in the aircraft. What it does not replace
Honesty matters here. A simulator does not reproduce everything. It does not give you real weather at a real aerodrome, real air traffic control, real turbulence, or the particular physiological pressure of knowing the aircraft is genuinely airborne. Aircraft handling in the true sense is learned in aircraft.
The device and the aeroplane are complements. Procedures, failures and instrument discipline are built efficiently on the ground; airmanship, feel and operational judgement are built in the air.
Getting the most from it
- Prepare the procedure beforehand. Sessions are for practising, not for reading a plate for the first time.
- Ask for the failure again. Repetition is the point, and it is free.
- Treat it as a real flight. Students who use full checklists and proper radio discipline in the device carry those habits into the aircraft.
- Debrief properly. The learning is in the debrief.
