The Multi-Engine Rating: What Flying a Twin Adds to Your Licence

Moving from a single-engine trainer to a twin is one of the clearer step-changes in professional training. It is not simply a bigger aeroplane. A second engine introduces a failure mode that does not exist on a single, and learning to handle it is the point of the rating.

The asymmetric problem

When the only engine on a single-engine aircraft stops, the aircraft becomes a glider. That is serious, but it is symmetrical — the aircraft still wants to fly straight.

When one engine on a twin stops, the other keeps producing thrust on one side. The aircraft yaws and rolls towards the dead engine. Left unchecked at low speed this can develop into a loss of control. The response has to be prompt, correct and practised.

This is the central skill the multi-engine phase teaches: identify which engine has failed, control the aircraft, and then manage the situation — in that order, every time.

What the training covers

  • Asymmetric handling — recognising the failure and applying the correct control inputs
  • Critical speeds — the speeds below which directional control cannot be maintained on one engine
  • Engine-out performance — what the aircraft can and cannot do on remaining power
  • Engine failure after take-off — the highest-workload scenario, drilled thoroughly
  • Single-engine approaches — flying an approach and go-around asymmetrically
  • Systems — fuel, electrical, hydraulic and propeller systems more complex than a trainer’s

The aircraft

LLFA uses the Diamond DA42 for multi-engine training — a four-seat twin used widely for exactly this purpose. It is complex enough to teach genuine multi-engine discipline while remaining a training aircraft rather than an operational type. See it in the fleet.

Much of the procedural work is rehearsed first in the Flight and Navigation Procedures Trainer (FNPT II) simulator, which can be configured for multi-engine operations. Drilling an engine failure twenty times on the ground changes how you respond to the first one in the air.

Why it comes after the Instrument Rating

The sequence is deliberate. Instrument flying is demanding on its own; asymmetric handling is demanding on its own. Combining them before either is secure overloads the student.

Once both are established, the multi-engine phase consolidates the Instrument Rating in a more complex aircraft — flying instrument procedures in a twin, including with an engine inoperative. That combination is the closest a training programme comes to the operational environment of a commercial cockpit.

Why employers care

Almost all commercial operations are multi-engine. A pilot who has never flown asymmetrically has not been tested against a failure mode they will be expected to manage. The multi-engine phase is not an optional extra on a professional pathway; it is part of what makes the licence usable.

Multi-engine operations form one of the five stages of the Commercial Pilot Licence with Instrument Rating and Frozen Airline Transport Pilot Licence programme, alongside ground school, single-engine flying, instrument flying and upset prevention and recovery.
